For the past few years I’ve been planning to shoot a video on ‘How to Photograph Kids’. There is really nothing out there on this subject. So, as of Sept/Oct 2019, I am going to start getting some footage.
I intend to spend the next couple of years shooting footage, so I am looking for families who’d like to be part of this. The formula is straightforward, I shoot photos and video and the families get the photo session for free.
My normal rate for a session starts at C$500 in Toronto, and is double that in Hong Kong. In the early stages of this project, I will be doing sessions for free and handing over around 40-50 hi-res retouched files, same as I do with all my clients.
You will need to sign a model release giving me permission to use the images and video. And I will have a bit of say on location and wardrobe, but that’s about it. I’ll be wearing a GoPro camera as well as shooting video with my stills camera. I will be chatting about the process.
I won’t be doing VDO the whole time.
I never use names the kid’s names, and for the most part I won’t be including adults.
I will be submitting a few images for stock as well, as I haven’t updated my catalogue in years.
After doing this for 15 years, I’ve accumulated a huge amount of know-how on the subject. I want to create something to help parents take great photos of their kidlets long after I’m gone. Most of the photography videos I see are all about equipment and settings, but they miss the point. My approach is about light, location, and how to make it fun. That’s the secret of kids photography.
I aim to photograph at least one hundred kids to fully illustrate all the concepts. How to shoot on sunny day, how to shoot on a rainy day or an overcast day. How to photograph on a beach, a park, an urban jungle or a quiet home. How to photograph actions, how to work with shy kids, and on and on. There is a big job, and I will be kicking it off in the fall of 2019 after putting it off for a couple of years.
Hope you can help!
