20 Years of Natural, Candid Photoshoots That Kids Actually Enjoy

Looking for a Hong Kong professional family portrait photographer who connects with kids and lets them direct the photo shoot?

Hong Kong candid family photographer.

For nearly two decades, I’ve photographed families across Hong Kong. The whole approach has always been: Kids Being Kids

And the photos take care of themselves

No studios. Minimal props. (Books and balls all good.)

No “say cheese.” No pressure.

Reluctant teenagers, wobbly toddlers, chaotic four-year-olds all the way up to grandparents who have never been photographed with their grandkids. I know how to work with all of them.

Hong Kong Family Photographer | Family Photoshoots Across the City

As a freelance Hong Kong portrait photographer for two decades, I know where and when to create relaxed family photos without crowds, stress, or forced poses.

What a Session Actually Looks Like

We meet at a location that works for your family. Generally just pick something easy that is close to home. From there, things stay simple:

  • Kids do their kid thing

  • Everyone stop worrying about the camera

  • I follow what’s happening with minimal direction

Most sessions last around an hour to an hour and a half. Fast-moving, no time for anyone to get bored.

I like working with shy kids, I just leave them alone for a while. They always end up giving the best photos.

  • “Ian has photographed our growing family for 3 years… absolutely fabulous.”

    Deb

  • “He connected with our boys right away, helping them feel at ease. We treasure the photos.”

    Chris

  • “Those portraits are still on our walls — treasured memories.”

    Emily

  • "Ian has taken the most beautiful photos of our family over the years. He did a superb job and was so easy to work with."

Locations Across Hong Kong

As someone who spent many years in the Canadian motion picture industry, Hong Kong just feels like a giant movie set. The backdrops are world-class everywhere you turn. I have across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories.

Popular session areas include:

Or anywhere that means something to your family.

Most families choose outdoor sessions for the space and freedom they give kids, but if you prefer something more traditional, at-home family photography in Hong Kong can be arranged to create natural portraits in and around your own space.

Before You Book

Timing

Stop waiting for the “perfect moment”, there is no perfect moment. (If there was it was six months ago.) The thing I hear over and over is that families waited till their kids were too old for their first photo shoot.

If you only do one session, pick the wobbly toddler phase.

What to wear

Comfort is Number One. Maybe let the kids decide what to wear, their happiness is key! Think coordination over matching. More thoughts here on wardrobe.

Pets

Always welcome, they’re part of the family too.

Trusted by Hong Kong’s Leading International Schools

The same approach extends to:

Different contexts, same principle: earn trust, stay unobtrusive, wait for the real moment. As a family photographer, Hong Kong international schools trust me for my decisive style in schools. Basically I am ruthlessly fast, and can get the shots before anyomne knows I’m there.
